A Holistic Approach to Family Well-Being: Nurturing Health Through Nutrition, Fitness, Natural Hair and Nails, and More…   Angela (Angels) Rosesen

In the modern hustle and bustle of life, ensuring the well-being of our families has become a paramount concern. Embracing a holistic approach that encompasses nutrition, fitness, natural hair and nail care, and other wellness practices is proving to be pivotal in fostering both physical and mental health. The profound impact of these aspects on family well-being.

Nutrition is the cornerstone of vitality the significance of a well-balanced diet cannot be overstated. It lays the foundation for optimal health by providing essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals necessary for growth, energy, and overall vitality. Here are a few guiding principles for steering your family towards better nutrition:

Embrace diversity and encourage the consumption of a colourful array of whole organic foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This diversity ensures that your family receives a comprehensive spectrum of nutrients required for their well-being.

Staying hydrated is key to maintaining the body's functions and supporting efficient digestion. Make water the beverage of choice in your household, and encourage regular sips throughout the day.

Minimize the intake of processed foods and soft drinks laden with sugars, and glucose also known as the hidden sugar in soft drinks, sugar-free drinks and desserts which also contain unhealthy fats, and additives. Opt for whole, unprocessed and organic alternatives to provide your family with the nourishment they genuinely need.

Engaging in regular physical activity benefits not only the body but also the mind. Participating in family-oriented fitness endeavours not only promotes unity but also enhances mental well-being. Here are two illustrative fitness activities, including a mental well-being exercise:

Start your family outings in the great outdoors with a nature walk. During this tranquil stroll, engage in the practice of mindful observation. Choose a specific colour or object, and challenge each family member to locate and share as many instances of it as possible. This simple exercise heightens mindfulness and deepens the connection to the natural world.

It’s a family dance party time, so why not transform an ordinary evening into an extraordinary one with an impromptu dance party at home. Let the music flow and groove as a family, the children will love this one. Dancing not only adds fun to your routine but also elevates your mood and alleviates stress. Other ideas are those good old board games,  card games, or even a game of Twister.

Doing it yourself, taking care of your natural hair, and nails care by embracing a natural beauty caring routine for your hair and nails using natural approaches can significantly contribute to overall well-being. By sidestepping harsh chemicals and adopting gentler practices, you can nurture healthier hair and nails for your family.  Start by using chemical-free hair care opt for shampoos and conditioners enriched with natural ingredients to maintain your family's hair health. Regular scalp massages using natural oils can stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth.

DIY RECIPES FOR YOUR HAIR  and NAILS

Rosemary Shampoo: Mix 1/4 cup of rosemary tea with 1 cup of coconut soap. Add a few drops of olive oil for dandruff or lemon juice for oily hair.  Wash your hair as usual and rinse see below.

Rosemary's hair rinse: Mix 1/2 cup of warm water with 1/2 cup of rosemary tea pour the liquid through your hair after the shampoo and rinse with warm water.

Rosemary Hair Spray: 10 drops of rosemary essential oil to a 1/2 teaspoon of joba or olive oil pour the mixture into a spray bottle and fill it with warm water.  Proceed to use the spray once a day

Family nail care ritual is important. Educate your family about the importance of proper nail care and not using harsh chemicals such as hand lotions and nail polish. Encourage the use of non-toxic nail polishes and emphasize the significance of clean, well-trimmed nails. Nourish the nails with massages using natural oils such as olive oil, or to enhance their strength and appearance.  Here is one of my family recipes which we still use today.

Grandma Angela Lotion

Ingredients:

 1/4 cup shea butter

1/4 cup coconut oil

2 tablespoons sweet almond oil (or any carrier oil of your choice)

10-15 drops of essential oil (lavender, chamomile, or citrus oils are great options)

1 vitamin E capsule oil (a few drops for added skin benefits)

Instructions:

Prepare Your Work Area: Before you begin, ensure your workspace is clean and sanitized. Wash your hands thoroughly and have all your ingredients and utensils ready.

Double Boiler Method (or Microwave): If you're using solid shea butter and coconut oil, you'll need to melt them first. You can use a double boiler on low heat or a microwave-safe bowl in short bursts (10-15 seconds each time) until the ingredients are fully melted. Be cautious not to overheat or burn the oils.

Mix the Oils: Once melted, remove the mixture from heat and let it cool slightly. Then, add the sweet almond oil (or your chosen carrier oil) and mix well. Carrier oils help to dilute the shea butter and coconut oil, making the lotion easier to spread.

Adding Essential Oils: Now, it's time to add your chosen essential oil. Essential oils not only add a pleasant fragrance but also offer various skin benefits. For relaxation, consider lavender or chamomile; for an uplifting scent, citrus oils like orange or lemon work well. Remember that essential oils are potent, so use around 10-15 drops based on your preference.

Vitamin E Oil: If you have vitamin E oil on hand, add a few drops to the mixture. Vitamin E oil is rich in antioxidants and can help nourish and protect the skin.

Mix and Cool: Give the mixture a good stir to ensure all ingredients are well combined. Then, let it cool down slightly. You want the mixture to thicken, but not solidify completely.

Whipping the Lotion: Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer, start whipping the mixture. This will incorporate air and create a creamy texture. Whip for a few minutes until the lotion reaches a smooth and fluffy consistency.

Storage: Transfer the whipped lotion into clean, airtight containers. You can use small glass jars, plastic containers, or even repurpose old lotion containers.

Cool and Set: Allow the lotion to cool and set at room temperature. It will solidify and become more stable as it cools.

Usage:

Apply the homemade hand lotion as needed throughout the day to keep your family's hands soft and moisturized. A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and rub it in until absorbed.

The process is so simple that you can involve your children in making their own personalized lotions with their favourite scents.

Cultivating mental serenity, therefore in addition to nutrition, fitness, and personal care, there exist several other wellness practices that can significantly contribute to your family's mental well-being.

Mindfulness and meditation by dedicating some time to mindfulness exercises and meditation such as praying or choice of meditation as a family. Engaging in deep breathing and immersing yourselves in the present moment can effectively reduce stress levels and heighten mental clarity. Another idea would be to have a family art and creative hour by unleashing your family’s artistic side by indulging in drawing, painting, or crafting. These activities provide an avenue for self-expression and serve as a relaxing outlet.
