Growing Strong: My Joyful Summer in the Garden

Aunty Frances (Francesca)  Age 69 1/2

Summer is a time of vibrant growth—both in my garden and in my life. For me, gardening offers the perfect mix of physical activity, mental stimulation, and social connection. I’ve found that the gentle movements like planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting give me a low-impact workout that helps me stay active without putting too much strain on my joints. Bending, reaching, and stretching while I work in the garden improve my flexibility and range of motion. Lifting pots, digging into the soil, and carrying tools help me build strength and endurance. Even just walking through the garden or working in different positions improves my balance and coordination. And on top of that, even moderate gardening helps keep my heart healthy by boosting blood flow.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to adapt my gardening routine to match my changing physical abilities. Raised garden beds have been a game changer for me because they save me from bending too much or kneeling for long periods. I also invested in some lightweight, ergonomic tools that don’t strain my wrists or back. I’ve learned not to push myself too hard—taking breaks is key. I always make sure to rest and rehydrate. I’ve also started choosing easier plants to take care of—the ones that don’t need constant attention. And when there’s something a little too heavy or difficult for me, I never hesitate to ask for help. Luckily, my hunky neighbour Giovanni is usually nearby and more than happy to lend a hand!

Gardening doesn’t just help my body—it does wonders for my mind and spirit. Spending time in nature calms me and melts away stress. Planning what I’ll grow, deciding where to plant it, and keeping things looking nice gives my brain a healthy workout. There’s also a special kind of pride I feel every time I walk into my garden and see something blooming or harvest a few fresh veggies. Growing my own food and flowers fills me with a deep sense of joy and accomplishment. Plus, gardening helps me stay connected with others. I love chatting with neighbours about what’s growing, trading tomatoes for cucumbers, or joining in at the local garden club.

Before I start planting each summer, I like to plan out my garden carefully. I always make sure it’s easy to access and won’t be too hard to maintain. I chose a sunny spot with good drainage. I use rainwater whenever I can, collected in a massive old wooden barrel that my beloved husband once used to make wine. It feels special to use it for something so full of life. I water deeply but not too often, to encourage the roots to grow strong. I also mulch to keep the soil moist, stop weeds, and help the ground stay at the right temperature. And I always protect myself from the sun. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are part of my gardening outfit. I carry my trusty thermos filled with iced tea and make sure to sip often so I don’t get too hot or tired.

For me, summer gardening is more than just a hobby—it’s a rewarding and enriching part of my life. By adjusting the way I garden to suit my abilities and focusing on all the benefits it brings, I’m able to enjoy a season full of colour, fresh harvests, and a deep sense of well-being. It’s one of the best things I do for myself, and I look forward to it every year.

Hi friends, after I wrote my first article for Alla Salute, I had many requests for a second one.😄

Do you ever feel like your homework is really hard? Or maybe you just wish someone could help you when you're stuck? Guess what,  there are some super cool computer helpers called AI, which means Artificial Intelligence. That’s a fancy way of saying smart computers that can help you learn and do school stuff!  I usually use my notebook to do my homework and even my teachers say it's ok oh and my parents too!

Let me tell you about some awesome AI tools that kids in Canada (like us!) can use to get help with homework. 📝

Meet Khanmigo!

Khanmigo is like a robot buddy from Khan Academy that helps with homework. If math is tricky, Khanmigo can explain it in a way that makes sense. It can also give you fun writing ideas and answer questions when you're curious. It’s like having a smart friend who loves school!

TeachMateAI is Fun!

TeachMateAI was made for teachers, but kids can use it too. It makes school stuff way more fun. You can use it to help with your homework or even to make studying easier. It’s like a teacher in your notebook or laptop!

Office Bullying: Recognizing, Addressing,

and Preventing It

Denyse Leon  Psychology Student TMU

Office bullying is a serious issue that can have devastating effects on victims' mental and physical health, as well as workplace productivity. It's characterized by repeated, unreasonable actions directed towards an individual or group, creating a hostile work environment.  Controlling attitudes from superiors or business partners, self-absorbed behavior, and talking down to employees or partners are all forms of bullying.

Recognizing Office Bullying

*   Verbal Abuse: Name-calling, insults, threats, intimidation, constant criticism.

*   Social Isolation: Exclusion from meetings, projects, or social events; spreading rumors or gossip.

*   Cyberbullying: Harassing emails, text messages, or social media posts.

*   Physical Intimidation: Threatening gestures, unwanted physical contact, or sabotage of work.

*   Micromanagement: Excessive monitoring and control of work, undermining confidence and autonomy.

*   Unreasonable Workloads: Assigning excessive or impossible tasks, leading to stress and burnout.

*   Controlling Attitudes:  Demanding excessive control over work, decisions, and personal time; constant monitoring and criticism; disregarding input or opinions.

*   Self-Absorbed Behavior:  Focusing only on personal needs and accomplishments, disregarding the contributions and feelings of others.

*   Condescending Communication: Talking down to employees or business partners, using patronizing language, and exhibiting a lack of respect.

How to Addressing Office Bullying

*   Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of all incidents, including dates, times, witnesses, and specific actions.

*   Talk to Your Supervisor or HR: Report the bullying to your supervisor or human resources department. Provide them with your documented evidence.

*   Seek Support: Talk to trusted colleagues, friends, or family members for emotional support.

*   Consider Legal Action: If the bullying persists despite reporting it, consider seeking legal advice.

How to Control and Put a Stop to Controlling Behavior

*   Set Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries and expectations regarding how you want to be treated.  This includes setting limits on excessive demands and controlling behaviors.

*   Assert Yourself: Don't be afraid to speak up when you experience controlling or disrespectful behavior.  Express your concerns calmly and directly.

*   Document Interactions: Keep records of interactions with controlling individuals. This documentation can be helpful if you need to escalate the issue.

*   Seek Mediation: If possible, seek mediation to help resolve conflicts and establish more respectful communication patterns.

*   Seek Support: Talk to a mentor, trusted colleague, or therapist to gain support and guidance in dealing with controlling individuals.

*   Consider Escalation: If internal efforts fail to resolve the issue, consider escalating the matter to higher management or external authorities.

Preventing Office Bullying

*   Establish Clear Policies: Implement clear anti-bullying policies and procedures that are communicated to all employees.

*   Provide Training: Offer training to employees on recognizing and preventing bullying behaviors, including controlling attitudes and condescending communication.

*   Promote a Culture of Respect: Foster a workplace culture that values respect, empathy, and open communication.

*   Address Issues Promptly: Take immediate action to address any reported incidents of bullying.

*   Encourage Reporting: Make it easy and safe for employees to report bullying without fear of retaliation.

Office bullying is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. By understanding how to recognize, address, and prevent it, we can create healthier and more productive work environments for everyone.

Positive Mindset for Work or Self-Employment

Angela Rosesen  Undergraduate Psychology Student

A positive mindset is crucial for success, whether you're employed or self-employed. It affects productivity, creativity, and overall job satisfaction. A positive outlook helps navigate challenges, fosters resilience, and promotes a healthier work-life balance.

Here's how to cultivate a positive mindset by practicing gratitude.  Regularly acknowledge what you appreciate about your work, even small things. Keep a gratitude journal to record daily wins and positive experiences.

Reframe Challenges: View obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of focusing on setbacks, analyze them to identify solutions and improve your approach.

Celebrate Successes by Acknowledging and celebrating your achievements, no matter how small. This reinforces positive feelings and motivates you to continue striving for your goals.

Self-Care is Essential by Prioritizing activities that promote physical and mental well-being. This includes exercise, healthy eating, sufficient sleep, and relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga.

Set Realistic Goals by Avoiding setting overly ambitious goals that can lead to frustration and discouragement. Break down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps to maintain momentum and a sense of accomplishment.

Positive Self-Talk by replacing negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Challenge negative thoughts and replace them with constructive and encouraging statements.

Learn from Mistakes by viewing your mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures. Analyze what went wrong, identify areas for improvement, and move forward with renewed determination.

Seek Support by connecting with supportive colleagues, mentors, or friends who can offer encouragement and guidance. Sharing your challenges and celebrating successes with others can significantly boost your morale.

Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance avoid overworking, and prioritize activities outside of work that bring you joy and relaxation. This helps prevent burnout and maintain a positive perspective.

Continuous Learning is to embrace opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement. This keeps you engaged, motivated, and confident in your abilities. Many Canadian Colleges, Universities and private vocational school offer refresher courses and certification take do this and you shall see the benefits.

Consistently practicing these strategies, you can cultivate a positive mindset that enhances your work experience and contributes to your overall success.

Embracing Canadian Summer Habits

Embracing Canadian Summer Habits

Wolf Folls Nutritionist

Canadian summers are precious, offering a brief respite from the cold. Making the most of these warm months involves embracing healthy habits that nourish your body and mind while enjoying the season's bounty. This article focuses on practical tips and simple recipes using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Healthy Summer Habits in Canada

  • Hydration is Key: Canadian summers can be surprisingly hot and humid, especially in certain regions. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day. Infuse your water with cucumber, mint, or berries for a refreshing twist.
  • Embrace Seasonal Produce: Canadian farmers' markets overflow with vibrant fruits and vegetables during the summer. Stock up on berries, tomatoes, corn, zucchini, and more. These ingredients are packed with nutrients and flavour.
  • Outdoor Activities: Take advantage of the longer daylight hours and warmer weather by engaging in outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, swimming, or simply relaxing in a park are all great ways to stay active and enjoy the scenery.
  • Sun Safety: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing a hat, and seeking shade during peak sun hours.
  • Balanced Diet: Focus on a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Summer is a time to unwind and de-stress. Incorporate mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga into your routine. Spend time in nature to reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
  • Navigating Climate Change: Canadian summers are becoming increasingly unpredictable due to climate change. One day it might be scorching hot, the next unexpectedly cool. To avoid getting sick or depressed by these fluctuations, be prepared with layers of clothing, stay informed about weather forecasts, and adjust your plans accordingly. Maintaining a positive attitude and focusing on the aspects of summer you can control is key. Don't let unpredictable weather steal your joy!
