Loosing a Young Child

How to Cope When You Lose a Young Child: A Journey Through Grief and Healing by Aunty Gina

Some moments change the shape of a person’s life forever and the loss of a child, if it's your own or an immediate family member, is the most painful grief someone goes through. Whether the cause is illness, addiction, or a tragic accident, this kind of grief lives in the heart and soul. It speaks in silence, lingers in memories, and reshapes what love and time feel like. It’s a sorrow that no parent, or in my case, as Aunty Gina,  imagines carrying, and once it arrives, nothing is ever the same. I was in constant contact with my Jordie, my nephew had one sweet, kind soul and heart. Always had a smile on his face, regardless of his challenges; he faced them head-on.

The death of a child shatters the natural order. I imagined my brother's pain, since parents expect to nurture, guide, and protect—not bury. The emotional aftermath is often compounded by guilt, confusion, or even anger at the world’s cruelty. The dreams, the laughter, the milestones that were supposed to be—all of them pause. Yet somehow, life demands that we continue living.

Coping begins not with trying to “get over” the loss, but with understanding that this pain will never leave you, it will always be there, and it will change. It becomes a companion, evolving over time from the sharp edges of early grief into a softer ache. That ache, though permanent, doesn’t have to stop you from finding moments of meaning again.

In the early days, allow yourself the grace to fall apart. Cry freely. Speak their name. Look at photos, write in journals, or scream into the sky if that’s what your grief calls for. There’s no correct script, no timetable. What matters most is not denying the sorrow. Suppressing it leads to emotional isolation. Let your pain be seen and heard. Don't listen to the people who tell you to move on right after the funeral; he is gone. Just grieve, the only way you know how.

Even though grief feels inherently solitary, connection is crucial. Seek out those who understand the other parents and family members walking this same path. Support groups, especially ones tied to the specific circumstances of loss (be it a rare illness, substance abuse, or sudden tragedy), can offer a safe space for sharing the burden. Therapy can help unravel the chaos within. And sometimes, just sitting quietly with someone who doesn’t try to fix you is the comfort you didn’t know you needed.

Some parents and family members find solace in creating a legacy. Perhaps it’s a memorial garden, a charity in their child’s name, or writing a book about the journey. Others discover comfort in ritual lighting a candle each birthday, visiting a special place, or wearing something that belonged to their child or a mass in their memory. These acts don’t replace what’s gone. They make room for remembrance.

The physical toll of grief is real. Sleepless nights, numbness, exhaustion, your body grieves too. Treat it gently. A walk in fresh air, nourishing meals, time away from screens, and deep rest all allow your nervous system to begin recalibrating. Healing emotionally must start from within the body, even when it feels impossible to care for yourself.

Over time, you may notice something shifts. Not dramatically but subtly. A laugh returns. A sunrise feels beautiful again. These are not betrayals of your child’s memory. They’re evidence of your resilience. Let joy coexist with grief; it doesn’t mean forgetting, it means living.

The loss of a child will always be part of you. But you are more than your grief. You are still a parent, a brother, a sister, an aunt, an uncle,  a friend...forever tethered to your child by love. That love transcends time, distance, and even death. And as you walk forward, one step at a time, the child's and your love will be your light. Missing you, Jordan. I love you, Aunty Gina.

Economic Hardship and Tariffs and a Prayer for Peace

 Economic Hardship and Tariffs

Financial strain, rising prices, and political uncertainty create tension for countless families. When money tightens, fear often follows—but prayer teaches us that provision isn’t just financial. Sometimes, a prayer can open unseen doors or grant the inner strength to endure and adapt.

Many turn inward with prayers like:

“Divine provider, sustain our needs and lighten our burdens. Show us where help may come, and grant us peace beyond the numbers.”

This kind of surrender isn’t weakness—it’s grace.

The Universal Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer

Among the most widely spoken prayers across many Christian denominations—and often appreciated in interfaith contexts—is The Lord’s Prayer. Its timeless words offer unity, hope, and direction:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Even for those outside Christianity, its themes resonate: reverence, surrender, forgiveness, and courage. It is also time to bring back the Lord's prayers in classrooms.

 Prayer as Spiritual Activism

Prayer doesn’t replace action—but it enhances it. To pray is to plant seeds of love that bloom into compassion, service, and resilience.

You may choose to:

  • Form prayer circles or spiritual gatherings

  • Praying in your local church, synagogue or mosque.

  • Practice quiet meditation for global healing

  • Write and share your personal prayers

  • Support charities and victims with intentional service

When You Feel Alone, You’re Not

One beautiful truth of prayer is this: You’re never truly alone. Whether you’re one voice in a crowd or the only candle lit in a dark room, your prayer joins a current of hope shared by millions.

Let your spiritual light shine. Let prayer be your compass, your comfort, and your quiet rebellion against fear.

Closing Reflection

So as the world shakes, economies shift, and governments clash—don’t forget what remains unshaken. Prayer reminds us that behind chaos, there is still love, still hope, still possibility. The sacred doesn’t disappear when times are hard—it emerges more clearly, if only we pause to feel it.

And maybe, just maybe, one person’s prayer is what awakens someone else’s faith.

Global Events and How We Can Respond Positively

From Crisis to Catalyst: How Global Events Are Shaping Us—and How We Can Respond Positively

In recent years, it’s felt like the world is a whirlwind of upheaval. Climate disasters, inflation, conflict, digital disruption, and rising mental health challenges are just the tip of the iceberg. The weight of these events affects everyone—whether you’re a parent juggling rising costs, a student trying to adapt to AI-driven learning, or a senior facing new health vulnerabilities.

But what if—instead of letting these issues paralyze us—we viewed them as a collective invitation to reflect, pivot, and grow?

This article explores several key global issues shaping our lives, and how we can reframe them to spark resilience, community, and forward momentum.

Climate Change: The Planet’s Call to Action

What’s happening: Raging wildfires, record heatwaves, melting glaciers, and floods are no longer isolated events—they’re persistent and global. From Tokyo to Toronto, people are feeling the consequences.

How to reframe it: These challenges have triggered an explosion of innovation: from solar-powered schools to edible packaging, communities are creating solutions. Climate anxiety is real, but so is climate action.

Steps forward:

  • Join local sustainability efforts (tree planting, cleanups)

  • Support businesses with eco-conscious missions

  • Reduce, reuse, and rethink your daily consumption habits

Inflation & Economic Pressure: A Wake-Up Call to Financial Mindfulness

What’s happening: Groceries, rent, and fuel prices have skyrocketed. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck, adjusting dreams and lifestyles.

How to reframe it: While painful, economic turbulence can sharpen financial literacy and prompt wiser resource management. Families are learning to budget, save strategically, and support one another.

Steps forward:

  • Build community swaps or savings circles

  • Focus on experiences, not material excess

  • Advocate for accessible financial education in schools

Geopolitical Conflict & Displacement: Compassion Over Fear

What’s happening: Wars in Ukraine, Sudan, and other regions have displaced millions. Border politics, migration struggles, and humanitarian crises fuel division and fear.

How to reframe it: Amid turmoil, we see humanity rising: neighbors helping refugees, social media mobilizing aid, and empathy replacing judgment. Every story of displacement is one of resilience.

Steps forward:

  • Learn about migration stories from firsthand perspectives

  • Donate or volunteer with refugee support organizations

  • Cultivate cultural understanding in your own community

Mental Health: The Quiet Crisis, Loudly Addressed

What’s happening: Loneliness, anxiety, and burnout are increasingly common—from teenagers to seniors. The pandemic unearthed wounds that are still healing.

How to reframe it: For the first time, mental health is being treated with the same urgency as physical health. Open conversations, therapy apps, and emotional education are changing the landscape.

Steps forward:

  • Normalize mental wellness check-ins with friends and family

  • Practice daily mindfulness or journaling

  • Encourage schools and employers to prioritize mental health resources

Technology & AI: Evolution at Lightning Speed

What’s happening: Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, learn, and communicate. From deepfake concerns to job displacement anxiety, the pace feels dizzying.

How to reframe it: Technology is a mirror—reflecting both our fears and our genius. Used ethically, AI can democratize learning, streamline workflows, and improve lives.

Steps forward:

  • Encourage thoughtful use of AI tools in education

  • Learn digital skills to stay adaptable

  • Join conversations about tech ethics and responsibility

Age Divides & Generational Misunderstandings: Time to Build Bridges

What’s happening: Many older adults feel left behind in the tech race, while younger generations grapple with burnout and economic instability. The divide is real.

How to reframe it: Each generation holds unique wisdom. Seniors have lived through cycles of crisis and healing. Youth offer fresh vision and technological fluency. Together, we can tackle what no single group could alone.

Steps forward:

  • Foster mentorship programs across generations

  • Share stories—online or in person—that connect age groups

  • Reinvent family time with shared projects and learning

Responding with Resilience

It’s tempting to shut off the news and retreat when chaos looms—but every challenge carries potential. With empathy, creativity, and courage, we can transform anxiety into action. This doesn't mean ignoring reality. It means facing it together, intentionally, and with hope.

Ask yourself:  What is one global issue I care deeply about?  Who can I talk to or collaborate with today to make a difference? How can I build small daily habits that align with positive change?

Hard times demand soft hearts and bold choices. Let this be a chapter where humanity doesn’t just survive—it evolves.
