Thanksgiving and Everyday Gratitude

Thanksgiving and Everyday Gratitude

Author: Serena

Thanksgiving is a special time of year where families and friends come together to reflect on their blessings, share a feast, and express gratitude. While this holiday prompts a surge of appreciation, integrating gratitude into our daily lives can transform the mundane into the extraordinary. Recognizing the importance of gratitude on both special occasions and every day can cultivate a deeper sense of wellness, enhance our relationships, and elevate our spiritual practice.

The Power of Gratitude

Scientific research supports the profound effects of gratitude on mental and physical health. Studies indicate that individuals who practice gratitude regularly experience improved emotional wellbeing, reduced stress, and strengthened immune systems. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, fostering resilience against negative emotions. This shift can cultivate an abundance mindset, inviting joy and contentment into our everyday lives—a key component of holistic health.

Moreover, gratitude is inherently connected to spirituality. Many spiritual traditions emphasize the importance of gratitude as a pathway to connect with the divine or the universe. Developing a grateful heart encourages a sense of humility and openness, allowing for deeper connections with oneself and others. It can act as a powerful reminder that we are part of a larger tapestry of life, where gratitude becomes a sacred practice.

Embracing Everyday Gratitude

To fully embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving year-round, it’s essential to cultivate daily habits that encourage gratitude. Here are some practical strategies to incorporate gratitude into your everyday life:

1. Gratitude Journaling: Setting aside a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts can be a transformative practice. Focus on three things you're grateful for, whether they're monumental or mundane. This simple act allows you to acknowledge the small joys that often go unnoticed.

2. Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness meditation or yoga into your routine. During these practices, take a moment to express gratitude for your breath, your body, and the present moment. This connection to the here and now enhances your awareness of life’s blessings.

3. Expressing Thanks: Make it a habit to verbally express gratitude to those around you. Whether it’s through heartfelt compliments, thank-you notes, or small acts of kindness, acknowledging others fosters connection and positivity.

4. Create Gratitude Rituals: Incorporate rituals that resonate with you, such as lighting a candle, creating a gratitude jar, or even a family prayer. These traditions can serve as anchors, reminding you to take time to reflect on your blessings consistently.

5. Volunteer: Giving back is one of the most profound ways to appreciate what you have. By helping others, we can recognize our own abundance and cultivate empathy and gratitude in our lives.

Thanksgiving serves as a wonderful reminder to embrace gratitude, but incorporating it into our lives every day can yield lasting benefits. By fostering a spirit of gratitude, we enhance not only our wellness but also our connections with those around us. In this fast-paced world, taking the time to recognize and appreciate our blessings can be both grounding and uplifting.

As you gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, consider the importance of carrying that gratitude into everyday life. Each moment offers us a chance to practice thankfulness, transforming our perspective and enriching our journey. Cultivating gratitude is not just a seasonal practice; it is a pathway to joy, fulfillment, and a deeper connection with ourselves and the universe. Let this gratitude guide you throughout the year, creating a lifestyle that celebrates the beauty of everyday moments.

The Story of Make A Wish Foundation "Wish Man" on You Tube

Make a Wish Like ‘Wish Man’

   Timothy Spearman

I went to an event called Touching Toronto last night. It was deeply touching to see so many faithful believers out to witness the healing power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. As I was attempting to leave, I realized I had misplaced the key to my bike lock. I found a metal implement and tried to break the lock. No good. It would take a miracle to remove that lock. Just then, a Good Samaritan appeared to lend a hand. He went back inside the venue hall to look for my misplaced key. Within five minutes, he reemerged with the key. That event showed me how it’s people helping people that keep the world turning, without which it would surely grind to a halt.

This also showed the relevance of the premise of the film, Wish Man: “If someone needs help, you give it to them.” At first, the film seems to be about no-hopers who abandon their kids and end up on skidrow. But plot twist after plot twist brings characters who care into the life of Frank Shankwitz Jr. (Andrew Steel). When Frank is nearly killed in a motorcycle crash, his chief orders him to help a terminally ill boy named Michael, whose dying wish is to become a motorcycle patrol officer. At first, Frank appears too cynical to take on the assignment, but the police secretary, Kitty Carlysle (Kirby Bliss Blanton), who is assigned to help Frank recover, changes his mind by insulting his manhood, a sure mind-changer for any real man with a code.

The touching relationship spawned between Michael (Christian Ganiere) and his mentor Frank is all it takes to turn Frank’s thinking and life around. Young Michael is not afraid to die, and his fearlessness in the face of death, makes Frank realize he’s been weak and ungrateful for his blessings.

The dramatic reversals keep surprising the viewer till Frank Jr. and Frank Sr. (Bruce Davison) are given a chance at redemption. When Frank Jr. attends Michael’s funeral, Kitty receives a call from Frank Sr. at the station, who has seen the heartwarming story about his son in the newspaper. Taking down Frank Sr.’s address, Kitty cleverly has Officer Tom Wells (Frank Whaley) pass on the address stealthily to his partner Frank. Bitterly angry with his father for abandoning him as a child, Frank Sr. soon learns from Frank Jr. that his mother, Lorraine (Fay Masterson), had told him as a boy that his father had died in a car accident. When Frank Jr. asks why his father never came for him, his father explains that he had tried to find him, but he and his mother had disappeared without a trace.

With hope restored in his life, Frank is exonerated when he is framed in a case of police brutality. What follows is a dinner held in his honour, where he is told he has been promoted to detective. Feeling inspired by the sudden windfall of good fortune, Frank announces his intention to found a non-profit so that people like Michael can be granted their fondest wish. In the post-film epilogue, we learn that Frank reconciled with his mother Lorraine, whom he remained close till her death at age 90.

As Frank says at the dinner held in his honour, “I never thought I could make a difference, but I was wrong. I’ve seen it: a simple act of kindness can have a ripple effect.”

Inspiring words from an inspiring film, this is how Alla Salute Canadian Magazine has been given a new mission and mandate. We intend to hold interviews with people like Michael, people who are or have been through life-threatening circumstances that nearly stole their hope, but we intend to see it restored tenfold with the help of our readership. Would you help us launch our Good Samaritan Campaign in the advent of Christmas and the Holiday Season?

Global Events and How We Can Respond Positively

From Crisis to Catalyst: How Global Events Are Shaping Us—and How We Can Respond Positively

In recent years, it’s felt like the world is a whirlwind of upheaval. Climate disasters, inflation, conflict, digital disruption, and rising mental health challenges are just the tip of the iceberg. The weight of these events affects everyone—whether you’re a parent juggling rising costs, a student trying to adapt to AI-driven learning, or a senior facing new health vulnerabilities.

But what if—instead of letting these issues paralyze us—we viewed them as a collective invitation to reflect, pivot, and grow?

This article explores several key global issues shaping our lives, and how we can reframe them to spark resilience, community, and forward momentum.

Climate Change: The Planet’s Call to Action

What’s happening: Raging wildfires, record heatwaves, melting glaciers, and floods are no longer isolated events—they’re persistent and global. From Tokyo to Toronto, people are feeling the consequences.

How to reframe it: These challenges have triggered an explosion of innovation: from solar-powered schools to edible packaging, communities are creating solutions. Climate anxiety is real, but so is climate action.

Steps forward:

  • Join local sustainability efforts (tree planting, cleanups)

  • Support businesses with eco-conscious missions

  • Reduce, reuse, and rethink your daily consumption habits

Inflation & Economic Pressure: A Wake-Up Call to Financial Mindfulness

What’s happening: Groceries, rent, and fuel prices have skyrocketed. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck, adjusting dreams and lifestyles.

How to reframe it: While painful, economic turbulence can sharpen financial literacy and prompt wiser resource management. Families are learning to budget, save strategically, and support one another.

Steps forward:

  • Build community swaps or savings circles

  • Focus on experiences, not material excess

  • Advocate for accessible financial education in schools

Geopolitical Conflict & Displacement: Compassion Over Fear

What’s happening: Wars in Ukraine, Sudan, and other regions have displaced millions. Border politics, migration struggles, and humanitarian crises fuel division and fear.

How to reframe it: Amid turmoil, we see humanity rising: neighbors helping refugees, social media mobilizing aid, and empathy replacing judgment. Every story of displacement is one of resilience.

Steps forward:

  • Learn about migration stories from firsthand perspectives

  • Donate or volunteer with refugee support organizations

  • Cultivate cultural understanding in your own community

Mental Health: The Quiet Crisis, Loudly Addressed

What’s happening: Loneliness, anxiety, and burnout are increasingly common—from teenagers to seniors. The pandemic unearthed wounds that are still healing.

How to reframe it: For the first time, mental health is being treated with the same urgency as physical health. Open conversations, therapy apps, and emotional education are changing the landscape.

Steps forward:

  • Normalize mental wellness check-ins with friends and family

  • Practice daily mindfulness or journaling

  • Encourage schools and employers to prioritize mental health resources

Technology & AI: Evolution at Lightning Speed

What’s happening: Artificial intelligence is changing how we work, learn, and communicate. From deepfake concerns to job displacement anxiety, the pace feels dizzying.

How to reframe it: Technology is a mirror—reflecting both our fears and our genius. Used ethically, AI can democratize learning, streamline workflows, and improve lives.

Steps forward:

  • Encourage thoughtful use of AI tools in education

  • Learn digital skills to stay adaptable

  • Join conversations about tech ethics and responsibility

Age Divides & Generational Misunderstandings: Time to Build Bridges

What’s happening: Many older adults feel left behind in the tech race, while younger generations grapple with burnout and economic instability. The divide is real.

How to reframe it: Each generation holds unique wisdom. Seniors have lived through cycles of crisis and healing. Youth offer fresh vision and technological fluency. Together, we can tackle what no single group could alone.

Steps forward:

  • Foster mentorship programs across generations

  • Share stories—online or in person—that connect age groups

  • Reinvent family time with shared projects and learning

Responding with Resilience

It’s tempting to shut off the news and retreat when chaos looms—but every challenge carries potential. With empathy, creativity, and courage, we can transform anxiety into action. This doesn't mean ignoring reality. It means facing it together, intentionally, and with hope.

Ask yourself:  What is one global issue I care deeply about?  Who can I talk to or collaborate with today to make a difference? How can I build small daily habits that align with positive change?

Hard times demand soft hearts and bold choices. Let this be a chapter where humanity doesn’t just survive—it evolves.
