Growing Strong: My Joyful Summer in the Garden

Aunty Frances (Francesca)  Age 69 1/2

Summer is a time of vibrant growth—both in my garden and in my life. For me, gardening offers the perfect mix of physical activity, mental stimulation, and social connection. I’ve found that the gentle movements like planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting give me a low-impact workout that helps me stay active without putting too much strain on my joints. Bending, reaching, and stretching while I work in the garden improve my flexibility and range of motion. Lifting pots, digging into the soil, and carrying tools help me build strength and endurance. Even just walking through the garden or working in different positions improves my balance and coordination. And on top of that, even moderate gardening helps keep my heart healthy by boosting blood flow.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to adapt my gardening routine to match my changing physical abilities. Raised garden beds have been a game changer for me because they save me from bending too much or kneeling for long periods. I also invested in some lightweight, ergonomic tools that don’t strain my wrists or back. I’ve learned not to push myself too hard—taking breaks is key. I always make sure to rest and rehydrate. I’ve also started choosing easier plants to take care of—the ones that don’t need constant attention. And when there’s something a little too heavy or difficult for me, I never hesitate to ask for help. Luckily, my hunky neighbour Giovanni is usually nearby and more than happy to lend a hand!

Gardening doesn’t just help my body—it does wonders for my mind and spirit. Spending time in nature calms me and melts away stress. Planning what I’ll grow, deciding where to plant it, and keeping things looking nice gives my brain a healthy workout. There’s also a special kind of pride I feel every time I walk into my garden and see something blooming or harvest a few fresh veggies. Growing my own food and flowers fills me with a deep sense of joy and accomplishment. Plus, gardening helps me stay connected with others. I love chatting with neighbours about what’s growing, trading tomatoes for cucumbers, or joining in at the local garden club.

Before I start planting each summer, I like to plan out my garden carefully. I always make sure it’s easy to access and won’t be too hard to maintain. I chose a sunny spot with good drainage. I use rainwater whenever I can, collected in a massive old wooden barrel that my beloved husband once used to make wine. It feels special to use it for something so full of life. I water deeply but not too often, to encourage the roots to grow strong. I also mulch to keep the soil moist, stop weeds, and help the ground stay at the right temperature. And I always protect myself from the sun. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are part of my gardening outfit. I carry my trusty thermos filled with iced tea and make sure to sip often so I don’t get too hot or tired.

For me, summer gardening is more than just a hobby—it’s a rewarding and enriching part of my life. By adjusting the way I garden to suit my abilities and focusing on all the benefits it brings, I’m able to enjoy a season full of colour, fresh harvests, and a deep sense of well-being. It’s one of the best things I do for myself, and I look forward to it every year.
